Reigate firefighters joined colleagues from Crawley tackling a car fire on the northbound carriageway of the M23.
The crews were called to the motorway near Junction 11 at just after 3.15pm on Thursday (May 15), where a car was well alight in the outside lane.
The carriageway was closed between Junctions 10 and 11, and the southbound carriageway was reduced to one lane, while the firefighters dealt with the blaze – two of them putting on breathing apparatus and using two hose reels to douse the flames.
The car was left 70% damaged by the fire, which a West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said had started accidentally.
