Horley is gearing up for its big day of the year this Saturday (April 26).

The town's St George's Day celebrations will be in full swing in the town centre with an array of attractions and activities including the grand parade, live music, fun fair rides, more than 50 market stalls – and of course, St George and the dragon.

The celebrations in the High Street and Consort East car park will start at 10am and run through to about 5pm.

Organisers Horley Association of Traders (HATs) are hoping for a big turn-out for the revels.

Last year's event was the best-attended yet, drawing an estimated 7,000 people.

This year's parade through the town at midday will be led by the Redhill Corps Band with St George and the dragon.

The High Street will be lined by more than 50 market stalls and will be buzzing with live entertainment including the Carina Rose Dancers, the event's highly popular pie-eating competition at 2.30pm, and music from Back2Back, Drop Dead Red and Paul Cox.

Merstham-based community radio station Susy Radio 103.4 will be broadcasting live all day from the High Street, and there will be the presentation for the winners of the children's flag colouring-in competition at 11.30am.

Fun fair rides will be set up in Consort East car park.

There will also be food and refreshments outlets.

A HATs spokesman said: “It promises to be a fantastic day as everyone has worked really hard to get everything ready.

“We are particularly excited about the parade at midday led by the Redhill Corps and St George and his dragon.

“We would like to thank all the volunteers as without them none of this would be possible.

“In addition, special thanks to our sponsors, Fairalls and Britannia Crest.”

HATs took over the organisation of the celebrations from Horley and District Chamber of Commerce three years ago, and has seen the event go from strength to strength. Last year's record turn-out for the sixth annual event topped the previous record crowds of 4,000 and 5,000 for the third and fifth years' revels respectively. Traders and businesses enjoyed a surge in foot-flow.

After last year's success, the then-newly-appointed HATs chairman, Terry Chellew, said: “Our mission is clear: we want to make Horley’s St George’s Day celebrations the biggest and greatest in the South-east.”

HATs was set up in 2012 to help local businesses thrive, to petition local and central government to improve business conditions for local establishments, and to hold events to attract more people to the town centre.
