Curtain up this week on Star For A Night youth showcase in Redhill

Seventy-five young people from across the borough will be stepping onto the stage at Redhill's Harlequin Theatre this week in an annual showcase of up-and-coming talent.

The theatre will be presenting Star For A Night, Reigate and Banstead Borough Council's yearly talent show, this Thursday and Friday (April 10 and 11).

Giving the area's youth the chance to perform on a professional stage, the show sees all participants receiving free expert training in the run-up to the opening performance.

The theme for this year's production is Radio City and the show is set in a radio DJ's booth and features performances of songs from, among others, One Direction and Jessie J.

Adam De Save, borough council executive member for leisure, said: “Star for a Night is a great family evening out and this year's promises to be a really fun show.”

He said: “It's a variety show, so is packed full of covers of popular songs from artists like Tinie Tempah and Katy Perry, performed by our young singers, of course, and some truly excellent dancing."

He continued: “We couldn’t offer this opportunity without our very generous sponsors, Total Gas & Power Limited, and help from our colleagues at the Harlequin Theatre. “We have some very talented young people in our borough but they need somewhere to start. “Running Star for a Night is our way of giving them the chance to get some high-quality training and a taste of what it’s like to perform live on the stage of a public theatre and in front of a paying audience."

He added: "Tickets are very competitively priced so, if you haven’t seen Star for a Night in previous years, I encourage you to go this year. “You never know, you could see a future Rihanna or Harry Styles!"

Marion Driscoll of Total Gas & Power, said: “Working with the local community is important to us and as such, we are delighted to support this fun talent show for local young people." The event is also supported by grants from funding allocated to Surrey County Council members Coun Natalie Bramhall, Coun Jonathan Essex and Coun Dorothy Ross-Tomlin.

Tickets for the show start at £6 and are available from the Harlequin's box office on 01737 276500, or online at: www.harlequintheatre.co.uk
