Surrey Police is appealing for witnesses after a van driver died following a collision on the M25.

The collision, just before midnight on Thursday (February 6), happened on the anti-clockwise carriageway of the motorway between Junction Nine at Leatherhead and Junction Eight at Reigate.

Police said there were reports that a Mercedes Sprinter had collided with a lorry.

The driver of the Mercedes, believed to be a man aged in his 20s, was freed from the wreckage, but was pronounced dead while en route to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

The lorry driver, a man aged in his 40s, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by careless driving, and was being held in police custody.

Two lanes of the motorway were closed while an investigation was carried out.

Surrey Police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the collision, or who saw either vehicle prior to it, to call the Surrey Police Collision Investigation Unit on 101, quoting reference p14036409.
