Electric vehicle charging points to be installed at Redhill Station

Rail bosses have announced that new electric vehicle charging points (EVCPs) are to be installed at stations including Redhill.

Southern has said that work to install the EVCPs will start next month (February) and will be carried out in two phases.

The announcement came after the train operator was awarded £370,000 of funding from the Office for Low Emission Vehicles to enable the works to install more EVCPs at its stations. The first EVCPs were installed at its stations at Purley and Lewes in East Sussex.

Now Southern has said the first of its two-phase works scheme will see up to 30 more points provided for the public to use around its network.

The first stations to get the new equipment will be Redhill, Dorking, Three Bridges, East Grinstead, Horsham and Hove.

A spokesman for Southern said: “The EVCPs will be placed to enable the most beneficial use for Southern’s customers, particularly between Brighton and London, helping to build a workable network in association with the Sussex Air Quality Partnership’s plan which covers the South-east of England. “The plan will enable owners of electric vehicles to make their travel to and from the station more sustainable.”

Southern provides services in South London and between Central London and the South coast, through East and West Sussex, Surrey and parts of Kent and Hampshire.

Southern manages 156 stations, with 447,000 passenger journeys made each day on Southern services.

Owned by Govia, the partnership between the Go-Ahead Group and Keolis, it also operates the Gatwick Express.

Govia is the UK’s busiest rail operator, responsible for almost 30% of UK passenger rail journeys through its three rail companies, Southern, Southeastern and London Midland. Website: southernrailway.com
