Police step up fight against burglars in East Surrey
7:09pm Monday 4th November 2013 in News
Specialist officers are being introduced to investigate burglaries in East Surrey.
For Surrey Police has announced that the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for East Surrey is changing the way it investigates burglaries and bringing in specialist officers for the crimes.
From this month, each of the three rotas within the department will have a dedicated detective constable, three civilian investigating officers and one team co-ordinator who will be the single point of contact for burglary. There will also be three detective sergeants overseeing the dedicated officers.
The detectives and investigating officers will be responsible for burglary detection while the team co-ordinator will be the point of contact for victims and witnesses, keeping them updated during each stage of the investigation.
The specialist officers' remit will cover the Reigate and Banstead, Mole Valley, Tandridge and Epsom and Ewell areas.
The Force's announcement came after the launch of its anti-burglary initiative, Operation Candlelight.
Detective Sergeant Oana King, said: "Although Surrey as a whole remains one of the safest counties in the UK, we traditionally see an increase in burglaries during the autumn and winter months, which is most likely caused by the longer, darker evenings, which increase a burglar's opportunity to go about their criminal activity.”
Det Sgt King said: "We hope by introducing these specialist officers in CID we will be able to find those responsible for burglaries in East Surrey and bring them to justice, preventing other potential victims going through the stress and loss which is felt by those who have been targeted by burglars.
"Being burgled can have a hugely detrimental effect on the victim, not just financially but emotionally too, and the experience will stay with a person for some time.
“We hope you aren't a victim but if you do find yourself in the unfortunate position, rest assured our dedicated officers and team co-ordinators will investigate thoroughly and assist you every step of the way.”
