Surrey's first local fundraising group for national blind charity to launch in Redhill

A new fundraising group for the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) in East Surrey is to be launched next week after last week's snow postponed its first launch date.

The RNIB Redhill and Reigate Fundraising Group will now be launched at RNIB Redhill Community Living Service in Philanthropic Road, Redhill, on Wednesday, February 6, at 6pm.

The group had to postpone its first launch date when last week's snow and icy conditions made the venue inaccessible.

The RNIB is in the process of developing local fundraising groups throughout the country, and the Redhill and Reigate Group will be the first in Surrey.

Its aim will be to raise funds and help raise awareness of the charity, whilst having fun.

The group will be volunteer-led and will hold events including coffee mornings, quiz nights, auctions of promises and golf days.

An RNIB spokesman said: “Sight loss can strike anyone at any time, leaving people feeling frightened and isolated, and devastating lives.

“RNIB is dedicated to supporting blind and partially sighted people of all ages to live as independently as possible.

“Our work is varied, ranging from RNIB Redhill Community Living Service, emotional and practical support, through educational and employment services, to our most well-known service, RNIB Talking Books.”

The group is appealing for people who would like to get involved and who can spare a few hours every few weeks, with no experience necessary, to register their attendance for the launch by calling Eileen Haffenden on 01892 730390, or emailing: eileen.haffenden@rnib.org.uk
