Horley Town Council this week announced the death of former Horley resident and “tireless” leading figure in the local community, Syd Fewtrell.

Mr Fewtrell, who lived with his wife Joan in the town for more than 40 years, died on January 19, after a short illness.

They had moved to Devon six years ago to be closer to family.

Horley town clerk Alan Jones said Mr Fewtrell and his wife were presented with Horley Town Council's highest honour, the Horley Town Award, in 2000.

He said: “Syd and Joan were awarded Town Awards in 2000 in recognition of their tireless work for the community, in particular Neighbourhood Watch, Horley and District Police and Community Partnership, the Youth Community Centre and Strawson Hall.”

He continued: “Syd was also very active in the Scouts for many years and was chairman of the Reigate and Redhill Aquarist Society. “Our thoughts are with Joan and her family at this sad time.”
