The man, aged in his 40s, was taken to East Surrey Hospital, Redhill, for treatment after being assaulted at the football ground in Thornton Close.

The attack yesterday at about 2pm came in a row between a group of people after an Under 17s match.

The game had been played between Horley and Epsom and Ewell.

A short time later, police arrested a man aged in his 40s from the Epsom area on suspicion of assault.

A Surrey Police spokeswoman said he had been released on police bail until Friday, February 22, while the investigation continues. Investigating officer Detective Constable Errol Chetty from Reigate CID, said: "I would appeal to anyone who attended the match between Horley and Epsom and Ewell, who witnessed the assault or the events leading up to it, to contact officers with information.”

Det Con Chetty said: “There were plenty of people in the vicinity at the time of the incident, which has left the victim requiring hospital treatment, and we need to establish the full circumstances surrounding the assault and take appropriate action against those responsible.” Anyone with information on this assault is being urged to call Surrey Police on 101, quoting reference RB/13/345, or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
