YMCA members Czech out new cultures
A GROUP of young volunteers, residents and staff from Reigate and Redhill YMCA have enjoyed a cultural swap shop to the Czech Republic.
They took part in the European YMCA festival, joining in workshops covering dance, graffiti art, sport and life skills, and learnt about the lives of young people across the world.
The celebration of the YMCA movement included visitors from Mexico and Canada as well as Europe.
Esther Nash, 25, who works on the YMCA's involved youth volunteering project, said: "It was great for all of us to share experiences with 6,500 young people from over 60 countries.
"Cultural diversity is powerful, but whatever our context and walk of life, we all had a good time and came back empowered to be able to achieve great things in our communities."
Redhill art student Sean Flint used his talent to draw portraits at the festival and raised enough funds to cover the cost of the trip. He is planning to make a short film about the festival.
He said: "My favourite bits were the National Gallery and the Dali exhibition that we visited in the centre of Prague. It was really good to meet people from other countries."
