Safer bike ride to school
Oakwood School in Horley is on track for pedal power when a new cycle path is completed.
The path on busy Balcombe Road will be finished by the end of this month and Surrey County Council hopes the new safer path will encourage youngsters to ride a bike to school.
The school currently has one of the lowest cycling uptakes in the county, with only 1% of pupils pedalling to lessons.
To offer a safer route, the council is widening the existing pavement on the east side of the road to and converting it to a cycle way. For extra safety, this is separated from the road by a narrow verge. A new footpath is also being constructed next to the cycle route.
The extra width was added because children tend to feel safer in groups. The existing grass verge along this stretch will continue to provide a further separation from the road as well as a green edge to the highway.
The cycle path has been introduced with the new development in Horley in mind. With 2,600 new houses being built, primarily in two new neighbourhoods, there is a need for improved links to schools and the town centre.
The Balcombe Road scheme is not being funded by county council money but through an agreement that requires the developers to minimise the impact of their projects on the community by providing services and facilities.
