Criminal damage teenagers help swan sanctuary
Two Reigate teenagers involved in criminal damage in Redhill have completed a restorative order by helping out at a swan sanctuary.
The boys, aged 16, had filmed themselves on a mobile phone at Earlswood Lakes spitting, and one person was seen to throw something at swans on the lake in Woodhatch Road.
The investigation into the incident was led by Mole Valley rural affairs officer PC Jo Morris, who arranged for the boys to receive a restorative order.
Fittingly, the order was for them to spend a day at The Swan Sanctuary in Shepperton.
PC Morris said: "Both boys fully admitted their involvement in the incident and were thoroughly appalled and ashamed by their behaviour."
She said: "They were both keen to make amends and were willing to spend a day at The Swan Sanctuary helping out.
"I work really closely with The Swan Sanctuary and staff there were more than happy to allow the boys to spend a day with them in order to make up for their mistake."
She added: "Surrey Police is taking a common sense approach to dealing with incidents such as this and we are seeking to provide better resolutions for the public by delivering a service that the community want to see.
"Both teenagers successfully completed their restorative order which reinforces Surrey Police's commitment to ensuring justice is done, and we will use a variety of methods available to us to bring about satisfactory conclusions."
