Firefighters survey damage

Arsonists have struck again at derelict Reigate Priory Stables in an attack which destroyed more of the building's roof.

Four firefighter crews from Reigate, Dorking and Godstone went to the scene after phone calls from residents raised the alarm at about 3.15pm today.

The blaze was soon brought under control with the crews using two jets and with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

Bryn Strudwick, fire investigation and arson task force manager with Surrey Fire and Rescue Services, said : "It was a relatively small fire.

"Someone used a naked flame to set fire to newspaper."

He said: "I believe we've had three incidents there."

The brick-built stables, which is set some distance away from the nearest road, has a thatched roof which had already been damaged in the previous arson attacks.

The latest fire burnt away a further area of roof measuring about five metres by three metres.

It is believed the stables are of historic importance with a Grand National winner having been trained there and the late Queen Mother having kept some horses on the premises.
