Off-road rider's double challenge

AN OFF-ROAD mountain biker is planning a gruelling double.

Richard Sterry, from Reigate, is joining hundreds of other riders and taking part in both of the British Heart Foundation's (BHF) gruelling 100-mile Randonnée Challenge events.

The demanding route follows the South Downs Way and riders will set off on June 28 and July 26 from Winchester, Hampshire.

Mr Sterry, 41, will be riding both events with friends from Redhill Cycling Club.

In his teens he did the BHF's London to Brighton Bike Ride several times.

Inspired to get fit, he took up cycling again five years ago and did the London to Brighton in 3hr 20min. Amazed at his time he did the event for the next two years and got a personal best of 2hr 57min.

Nowadays, Mr Sterry prefers mountain biking and is also looking forward to doing the BHF's Hearts First London to South Coast in September.

Last year he rode the Randonnée Challenge with Garry Hall from Redhill Cycling Club and they raised £1,200 for the BHF to help fight against heart disease.

Last year, the week before Mr Sterry was due to do Randonnée, he was out on a regular ride with the Redhill club when one of the members suffered a heart attack and died.

He said: "It was a very traumatic time for many of us and it gave a completely new perspective to the Randonnée event. We therefore dedicated the ride to our friend Tony and his much loved humour that we all miss."

Riders can still sign up to either June 28 or July 26 rides. Each date hosts all three challenges of 100 miles, 65 miles and 35 miles and are only suitable for experienced off-road riders.
