The centre will have meeting rooms for groups and businesses

MEMBERS of Reigate Methodist Church are celebrating after receiving a gift that brings them a step closer to building a community centre in the heart of the town.

The charity the Peter Harrison Foundation, based in Reigate, will donate £50,000 towards the building costs of £1.2 million for the centre behind the High Street which will have meeting rooms for groups and businesses.

The donation comes just months after members failed to win much-needed lottery funding.

Ian Hunt, a member of the Reigate Community Centre fundraising committee, said: "This generous gift has lifted our spirits and made us all determined to keep on fundraising to ensure this much-needed facility is built for the people of Reigate."

Businessman Peter Harrison created the foundation to support local and national charities and since it began in April 1999, more than £14 million has been distributed.

Foundation director John Ledlie said: "The trustees support charitable activities that demonstrate an existing high level of voluntary commitment, together with well planned and thought out projects."

Church fundraisers are hoping building work can start early next year.

The next major fundraising event is a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore by Utopians Unlimited at the church on Saturday, June 21, at 7.30pm. Tickets are £8 and all profits will go to the community centre project. To book call Anne Miller on 01737 761659.
