Pupils return for 250th anniversary

FORMER pupils of the Royal Alexandra and Albert School in Reigate are to attend a reunion at the boarding school they once called home.

Students from as long as 60 years ago will attend the two-day event in August when they will stay in the dormitories and eat school dinners in the canteen.

The reunion is being organised by the Gatton Association, which is run by former pupils, and marks the 250th anniversary of the state-run school.

Former pupil Alicia Edwards is making a film to coincide with the reunion and is appealing for sponsors to help pay for it to be completed.

She began making the film a year ago and has already interviewed past pupils and filmed at the school.

She said: "I wanted to make the film because it is a state boarding school and there aren't many of those and there is a real mix of students.

"One girl's mum was a heroin addict and that's why she was sent there. Some other children had parents in the forces and that is why they were there. The film is all about the school from the point of view of the students.

"I wanted to show what it is really like because when you tell people you went to a boarding school they immediately assume it's a private school and it's not.

"The surprising thing I found, though, was although everybody loved it there and had fantastic memories, nobody said they would want to send their own children there.

"I think it was because we all missed out on our own family life, even though our times there were amazing."

Anyone who wants to join in the reunion or who is interested in sponsoring the film should email: reunion_2008@hotmail.co.uk
