Twenty-one tortoises stolen overnight

TWENTY-ONE tortoises have been stolen from a family home in Salfords.

The pets were taken from a garden in Bonehurst Road between Tuesday at 9.30pm and yesterday at 8am.

The reptiles, all cherished pets, were of various sizes and ages. Some of them were also microchipped.

Neighbourhood specialist officer PC Kinza Labassi said: "This type of theft is incredibly unusual and the owner is obviously very distressed.

"It would have taken some effort to remove the tortoises, and I would appeal to people who live or work in the area to think carefully.

"Do you remember seeing anyone acting suspiciously around the time of the theft, or has anyone asked about tortoises in the area?"

"This was a callous crime which has left a family very upset and we are determined to find whoever was responsible and bring the offenders to justice.

"We are following a number of lines of enquiry, but I am appealing to the community to come forward with any information which could help us reunite the tortoises with their rightful owner."

EU legislation means that tortoises cannot be imported, sold or offered for sale without a special permit.

Anyone who is offered a tortoise for sale or knows someone who has recently acquired a number of tortoises should contact PC Labassi at Surrey Police on 0845 125 2222.
