Last-ball decides a thriller

Horley 156 all out

Kempton 155-8

HORLEY were without a number of regulars for this Fullers League Cup match with some key players sustaining injuries over the winter and others finishing football commitments.

The league cup is a forerunner of the league, which starts next week when Horley are at home to Hampton Wick.

Horley were asked to bat first and had a steady start from Tomkins (10) and Roberts (15). After that only three players made contributions of note. Newcomer Atif (23) was looking good and was adopting a pleasing positive approach when he was run out with the returning John Dibble probably asking a little too much. Harry Chaudhary (40) and David Keyte (19) put together the only partnership of note with a further two run-outs contributing to the close of the innings in the 43rd over.

A total of 156 on a slow pitch did not look to be enough.

In reply Kempton moved along steadily and kept wickets in hand, with an asking rate of just under 3.5 per over they were keeping above the rate.

Horley's attack was heavily dependent on their four-man spin team who between them bowled 35 of the overs and kept things tight while grabbing the occasional wicket which helped keep the scoring rate in check. Chaudhary 2-30 and the ebullient Ahangama 2-27 were the main wicket-takers interspersed by a superb individual run out by Phil Norman.

With five overs to go Kempton stood at 140-5 so the requirement was to most a formality. Bunce and Laker had the privilege of bowling three and two respectively of these overs. In the 42nd over Laker took a further wicket, thanks to an excellent catch from Chaudhary. Three overs to go, nine needed.

Reaching the final over four were still required, although three would have been enough as Kempton would have lost fewer wickets. Even Adam Bunce was surprised when he got to the sixthball and two were still required. The field spread, the batman eventually connected and hit the ball to midwicket where Trevor Stevens calmly collected and threw to Adam Bunce who run out the batman by a good few yards.

As exciting a finish as anyone would want! And hopefully one which sets Horley's fortunes for the league season.

Horsham U12 47-3

Horley U12 48-3

HAVING won the toss Horley inserted Horsham on a grassy bouncy track and quickly established a stranglehold over the Horsham batsmen with a determined approach in the field.

The bowling attack was led by Regan Derham with a fine spell of swing bowling yielding (1-8). He was backed superbly by the bounce of Ben Swinton-Bland who caused all the batsmen problems in taking 0-7. Chris Cosham (0-5) and Charlie Robins (0-9) both completed miserly spells as all the bowlers completed their allotted overs, conceding fewer than ten runs each. The home side were unable to break free as Horsham finished on just 47 off their 20 overs.

Horley's lost two quick wickets in response but their resolve shone through as Toby Davie led the charge with a stunning peice of attacking play reaching (27 ret), and with Ben Swinton-Bland at his customary best mixing defence with clinical cuts finishing with (18 no) they rebuilt the innings and enabled Horley to win by seven wickets.

Horley U16 179-2

Slinfold U16 86-9

FOR Horley George Clarke and Angus Kirk (30ret) added 42 for the first wicket. The score reached 114 in the 19th over as Jamie Gainsford (28) and Lewis Forsdick (30ret) set up a big finish.

Andrew Cass (16 not out) and Harry Williams (31ret) added 62 in the last six overs.

Slinfold's reply reached 34-1 in seven overs, then Harry Williams, Anthony Defaveri, Matthew Phillips, and Angus Kirk (3-9) all took wickets.
