10,000 BC

10,000 BC (12A) *** - Camilla Belle, Nataneal Baring, Omar Sharif, Steven Strait, Cliff Curtis, Joel Virgel and Nathanael Baring.

FOR being just plain daft but also reasonably entertaining at the same time, 10,000 BC takes some beating.

And in the cheesy stakes, it scores very highly. Heck even Omar Sharif is in on the act as the narrator.

Director Roland Emmerich has never been known for his innate sense of subtlety - among his credits are Stargate, Independence Day, and the egregious The Patriot - and he doesn't disappoint here.

The (paper-thin) story is essentially an epic set against a simple coming of age tale.

As the end of the Ice Age approaches, it spells the end for the way of life of the mountainous Yagahl mammoth hunters.

As the tribe await salvation, praying to be rescued by a prophesied warrior, disaster strikes when slave traders capture their young men.

Seizing the moment, the youthful D'Leh (Steven Strait) realises his moment has come.

He and his beloved Evolet (Camilla Belle) embark on a dangerous odyssey to save his people from extinction.

The visual and sound special effects are truly fantastic as our heroes meet herds of woolly mammoths and the odd sabre-toothed tiger.

If only they had spent a bit more on the script.
