THIS enjoyable movie, from the same team who brought you The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, is ideal fodder for next week's half term.
Although it suffers from being a little too twee for its own good at times, it is still good value.
Based on the book by Dick King Smith and based in Scotland during the Second World War, a housekeeper's son Angus (a nice performance by Millions' Alex Etel) discovers an egg that hatches into a creature dubbed as a 'water horse'.
Most of the fun is to be had when young Angus tries to hide his little monster and there are some thrilling scenes when the fully-grown 'beast' takes to the water.
There's also a nicely judged love triangle between the adult characters in Ben Chaplin, Emily Watson and David Morrissey to keep the grown-ups engaged.
It's certainly no masterpiece but it is a fine looking film and has enough allure to win the day and keep all parties with a smile on their face, but only just.
