Sleuth

THE Italian Job, Alfie and now Sleuth...how many more cultish Michael Caine movies will we have to endure as hollow and inferior re-makes?

Probably as many as when the studios stop making money from such tosh is no doubt the answer.

And Caine himself is back starring in this poor and quite risible reprise of the 1970s minor classic he appeared in with Laurence Olivier, a film that is slickly repackaged for the dumbed down audiences of today.

Caine takes on the role that was originally played by Larry as the wealthy crime writer Wyke locked in a battle of wits with the self-assured young actor, the aptly named Lothario Milo (Jude Law) who has stolen his wife.

Both actors are badly let down by Kenneth Branagh's unsure direction or a Harold Pinter script that fails to capture the original film's sparkle.

Wyke makes Milo an interesting offer to stop sleeping with his wife in return for the proceeds of an insurance scam.

The only snag is that Milo has to fake a jewellery robbery in Wyke's house before the fun and games of the double-cross begin.
