Keighley Crusaders U-14s 12 Huddersfield 5

The second round of the Yorkshire Cup saw Huddersfield visiting Keighley for the second time this season.

From the kick-off both teams made their intentions known to each other with aggressive attacking and defending, with pressure on the Huddersfield line Keighley spilled possession, on the break away the Huddersfield centre went round the Keighley defence to open the scoring. Keighley reapplied the pressure from the restart, with the Huddersfield defence holding strong until the Keighley forwards forced their way over after keeping the ball tight, controlling a series rucks to go into half-time 5-5. The second half saw the Keighley forwards increase the pressure on their opposite numbers dominating all aspects of play and denying the Huddersfield backs any clean ball to work with. From a Keighley scrum the ball was quickly moved through the backs to score the only try of the half.

This was a great fixture with two local teams giving it all for their clubs. It was a very evenly contested game and two first half tries from Keighley were not enough to kill the game off. Basic handling errors and poor tackling from Keighley allowed Skipton back into the game. It was good to see the quality and effort that both teams were displaying and a 3rd try from Skipton, capitalising from a loose clearance kick from Keighley was enough to take the victory.

A nil nil scoreline can be deceptive, and the weather certainly didn't help, but it was a very exciting match. Keighley were far the better side and are slowly developing into a formidable unit. There are several strong tacklers including Billy Markham and Elliot Barker. Sam Todd is a natural marauding forward in the making. Skipton rarely looked like scoring with Keighley having the most near misses, including those from Sebastian Aucott and James Swift.

Keighley, captained by Cameron McIntyre, played Skipton in a closely fought match. The match was played in terrible weather conditions with both sides battling against mud, wind and rain. The first half saw Keighley defending well with a steady attack by Skipton, Billy Todd scored the first try for Keighley. Skipton, now on the back foot, concentrating on attacking Keighley, were faced with a strong defence from Bradley Akrigg, Eddie Martin and Josh Swift resulting in another try by Todd. The score at half-time was 3-2 in Keighley's favour, with Eddie Martin just scoring for Keighley before the whistle. The second half saw a heavily changed Skipton team to allow all players to be used and continue the sustained attack on Keighley. Skipton scored, faced by a Keighley defence of Johnny Tanner, Reiss Butler and Xavier Mangham, Cameron McIntyre broke through Skipton's defence scoring Keighley's fourth try. The benefit of Skipton's substituted team started to show, pushing Keighley hard. Only good defence and team work stopped Skipton scoring again, despite good attacks. Towards the end Keighley scored another try leading them to their victory against a strong Skipton side.
