WITH the future of Fairlop Waters wide open, campaigners hope that a survey of residents' attitudes will be taken into account.

Three years ago, at the height of the struggle to prevent seeing a racecourse on the site, the north east London section of the campaign for the protection of rural England (CPRE) polled residents on what they would like there.

With a racecourse now definitely off the agenda and Redbridge Council seeking ideas, the CPRE hopes its findings will be incorporated.

The survey found 109 people in favour of the area being protected from inappropriate developments that would affect the openness and beauty of the area. Eighty five others wanted Fairlop Plain to remain open as a nature reserve or country park.

An upgrade of the golf course was wanted by 25 people, and 18 wanted some form of a children's farm or educational facility.

Eight wanted the restaurant improved, and other suggestions included pathways for cycling or walking and a museum recording the days of RAF Fairlop.

North East London CPRE chairman, Ken Bray said: "The committee is delighted that the application for the racecourse has failed and would like to congratulate Barkingside 21 and the Aldborough Hatch defence association and are happy to have been associated with the fight.

"The result of the survey will, I hope, have some effect on the final use to which this valuable stretch of green belt will be put."
