Celtic Crusaders 6 Widnes Vikings 56 VIKINGS opened the season with a resounding 56-6 victory over Celtic Crusaders in the Northern Rail Cup.

Steve McCormack's men never looked troubled and opened their account after 18 minutes when Mick Nanyn broke the deadlock before adding the conversion.

Injury worry Scott Grix shook off an elbow problem and increased the lead eight minutes later after captain Mark Smith found him in acres of space to touch down. Nanyn added the kick.

Widnes were in cruise control and extended their lead before the break when Bob Beswick added a superb individual effort before Nanyn made it three from three with the conversion.

Damian Blanch and Smith added quick tries within 12 minutes of the restart before Crusaders grabbed a consolation through Richard Johnson.

But Vikings were in no mood for mercy as Grix grabbed two, while Dennis Moran and Kohe-Love completed the rout.
