After a period of 25 years, Otley Town returned to the West Yorkshire League with a resounding win.

The President of the league was spectating and he couldn't have failed to be impressed.

This was a great start to the season but no doubt there will be stronger opposition throughout this new campaign starting with local rivals Ilkley AFC on Saturday.

The Town squad has been strengthened by promoting several players from last year's successful reserve team, along with the new signings of Phil Jozefek (striker) and Oliver Spence (central defender).

With six new faces in Saturday's team the side seems to have a rejuvenated spirit.

Pre-season training has benefited from the involvement of former player Martin Earnshaw who has become a qualified coach. Martin has given an extra dimension to Tuesday evenings and the players seem to be responding well.

With Oliver Spence (unavailable), Sam Dexter (coaching in Finland), Charlie McGrath (working) and Peter Dawson (suspended) all missing, first team manager Roger Eli will have difficult decisions to make when these players return.

In fact these players must be thinking where they are going to fit in.

OTLEY TOWN 6 ALTOFTS 0 Town started this game well, with a passing game that Altofts never got to grips with. After action at both ends of the pitch, the first goal came after ten minutes when Danny Royston, with his back to the goal, was unnecessarily dragged to the ground.

Tom Chadwick stepped up and struck the ball well, to convert the penalty.

On his league debut Phil Jozefek got his first and Town's second through sheer determination. He chased a through ball, overpowered the centre-half and side-footed home.

In the second-half, Jozefek's second and Town's third came after excellent build up play by Danny Royston. Danny ran down the inside right track, then squared to Jozefek who hit a left footer into the corner of the net.

Danny Royston then helped himself to a hat-trick to celebrate his promotion to the first team from last season's reserves.

The first was from a header from a whipped-in cross from Tom Chadwick. The second came from an inch perfect pass by Adam Palmer through to Royston who lobbed the on-coming keeper.

To round off his hat trick, Royston's third goal was his best, when he went round the keeper and slotted in a nice finish from an acute angle.

No one individual played better than the rest in a game which was a tremendous team effort but for sheer class finishing Danny Royston should get a special mention.

Town's next two games are against teams that also won last Saturday. Ilkley beat Old Headingley AFC 3-1 and Ripon City beat Tadcaster Magnet Sports 5-2 This Saturday Town entertain Ilkley, kick-off 2.30pm; then on Wednesday Town entertain Ripon City, kick-off 6.15pm.
