WHILST my letter about Townside Fields was factually correct at the time of publication (Bury Times, March 15) I now need to make an important correction in the light of further information of which I was not aware at the time my letter was published.

This is that the site has been surveyed for wildlife in connection with a proposed park and ride scheme.

The survey has revealed important populations particularly of smooth newts, aquatic invertebrates and frogs and feeding areas for pipistrelle bats in the Easterly part of the site close by the Market Street overbridge.

As a consequence, the Greater Manchester Ecological Unit has designated that part of the site as a Grade B (of district significance) Site of Biological Importance (SBI).

The pyramids and that part of the site which is between Knowsley Street and the Metrolink line are not affected.

I will now be seeking informal discussion with planning officers so as to understand the options available for sustainable development of the easterly part of the site which combines our wider environmental aims with conservation of the local wildlife referred to above.
