Jean Bowden is the latest professional author to visit Sutton Writers Circle (SWC) as a guest speaker this Friday, October 14.

Bowden was first published in 1952 when, to finance the cost of travel and research for a non-fiction book, she wrote a romantic novel and a detective novel and both were published.

She had since enjoyed great success with her gentle middle of the road novels about career women, written under the name of Tessa Barclay, only one of 10 pseudonyms she has used.

Bowden has recently returned to detective fiction with an ex-Crown Prince as her protagonist and has also turned several television scripts into paperbacks, including Emmerdale, The Brothers and Nanny.

Founded in 1986, SWC's 80-strong membership comprises both published and unpublished writers of many genres from budding Shakespeares to aspiring Barbara Cartlands.

The club offers support and friendship at its local monthly meetings and workshops, with several writing prizes.
