A warehouse will have to be demolished after it was damaged by a huge blaze.

Firefighters were called to AA Cash and Carry in Spencer Road, Lidget Green, Bradford, after flames were spotted in the two-storey building.

Winds fanned the blaze hindering fire officers and it took firefighters a whole night to put it out.

At the height of the blaze on Sunday at 9pm there were 50 firefighters on site.

Once the blaze was out, it was discovered the building was unstable, with the gable end and the side leaning. The roof had also collapsed.

The heat was so fierce that an adjoining shop and storage area were also damaged.

Fire Service Crew Manager Alan Jordan, from Illingworth station, said: "The building will have to be demolished because it is structurally unsafe. It is just total devastation."

The cause is being investigated. Police are trying to trace the owner who will have to be notified before demolition work can take place. Firefighter Anthony Bearder, from Lidget Green Fire Station, said: "The building was pretty badly damaged and as it was quite windy the fire spread quickly."

Aftab Ahmed, who owns a newsagents on Legrams Lane, said: "I went past the cash and carry at about 5pm and there was nothing happening. Then from about 9pm everyone who came into my shop was talking about it." John Gray, head of building control at Bradford Council, said: "The building is unsafe and needs to be demolished. If the owner is unable to carry out the necessary work we have powers under the Building Act 1984 to undertake the work and recover costs from the owner."
