HOW magnificent it was to return to my home town of Hoylake to see not only a magnificent Open Golf Championship but the huge improvements made to the town.

I remember 1967, although I was only seven at the time - we had an American golfer staying in our spare room!

This time, the scale of the event was extraordinary. So congratulations to Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Wirral Council, North West Development Agency, Merseytravel and everyone else for stepping forward and pulling off a stunning international event.

And shame on all those who can only whinge at a few days of inconvenience or, heaven help us, uneven' cobbles; please get a life. Do you want to live in a backwater of mediocrity or in a world-class environment?

The renaissance of Liverpool is extraordinary and Wirral must not be left behind by those who cannot see beyond a minor inconvenience or two.

The Royal Liverpool is a truly world-class asset for Wirral and now the challenge is to see through the continuing regeneration of Hoylake and the rest of the borough to create a world-class destination for business and leisure.

In today's world, it is either world-class or no class.
