Good news at last! For the first time in weeks, clubs were able to get back on to the Thames last weekend.

Masons fished a points match at Medley where the river was still running off from the floods and very cold.

The 19 anglers found the going hard work and there were 12 blanks, but Andy Webb made the most of his peg at the top end of the Poplars as he put 46.14.0 on the scales for victory.

He had fish topping in his swim when he arrived and used a groundbait feeder, alternating between bread and worm on the hook. He banked eight decent bream, plus one tench.

Also up in the Poplars was Jan Jetowski, who took second place with three chub for 7.2.0, on the stick and maggot.

With five roach going 3.0.0, third angler home was Jason Smith, who also lost three big bream on the feeder and maggot.

A cold and breezy day didn't deter the anglers fishing Littlemore's Secretary's Cup at Glebe Lake, Fringford, where Matt Ryman came out on top with a mixed net of carp, roach, rudd and goldfish weighing 22.3.0. He caught them all on maggot over pellet.

Kevin Dolton also had a mixed net for second, but could easily have won if he had fished the margins earlier. He had a rudd a chuck in the last hour, but had to settle for 19.4.0.

Dave Rudman got off to a flier, taking slightly bigger carp, but fell away to finish with 18.5.0.

Barford St Micheal was the venue for Witney's latest club match, where it was very windy for the 11 members who turned up.

The top three weights were all pretty close, but it was Ed Kempster who took the honours with 21.14.0 - four carp on pole and corn, the best going 9.4.0 - plus some roach on maggot.

With four carp on the pole and chopped worm, Colin Manning was second with 20.4.0, followed by Graham Wilsdon.

The latest round in the Oxford Carp Winter League was fished at the normally prolific Rissington, but with the lake very clear, the 19 matchmen found it very hard work.

Andy Wiffen (RS Baits) used the long pole with pellet to catch 18.0.0 of carp for top spot. A mixed net of carp and rudd gave Gordon Brown second with 14.14.0, while Gary Knight landed 14.3.0 of carp down the edge with maggot for third place.

The Cherwell was a little patchy for Kidlington's Green Road SC-sponsored Open which attracted 16 anglers.

Northampton's Jim Martin fished the groundbait feeder with worm on the hook and had two bream for 10lb, plus some roach, for a winning total of 10.10.0.

He pipped Terry Lester (Kidlington), who had 10.2.0 on the pole and chopped worm - a bream going 5lb, plus several perch up to 2.9.0.

Jason Bean started off with a bait dropper full of chopped worm and then fished the lollipop float with worm and had 9.12.0 of perch for third.

Benson's fourth Rosebowl was fished on an out-of-sorts Thames at Benson. Of the six anglers, three blanked, while my old workmate Ray Dandridge came out on top with two chub worth 7.6.0 on bread and cheese cocktail.

Mick Marriott had three chub for a second-placed 6.9.0 on groundbait feeder with red maggot, followed by Dougie Cook with two chub on blockend and maggot for 4.5.0.

The Thame was hammering through for the 15 members of Cuddesdon Mill VAA who fished their Knock-Out Cup.

Fishing a slack, Brian Hutchings found a couple of chub on pole and maggot for a winning 4.7.0. Vernon Adams had a 3.3.0 chub for second place, while Jeff Ring's 2.7.0 chub was enough for third.
