Staines Town finally moved a place in the Ryman Premier League on Saturday after 95 days in 13th position, writes Steve Parsons.

A freakish 58th-minute own goal from defender Pat Sappleton settled that match.

Ali Chaaban's throw-in was whisked into the centre by Jake Newton and, as Mark Noweju closed in, Sappleton turned the ball past his own keeper, against the post, and into the net.

Watford's Ben Foster conceded a freakish goal to Spurs keeper Paul Robinson on Saturday and when he saw the TV footage, Staines keeper James Courtnage must have been grateful he didn't suffer the same fate.

Under three minutes had gone when Margate keeper Charlie Mitten's enormous wind-assisted drop kick only just cleared the crossbar on the bounce.

Mitten and Courtnage both made smart saves in a tight first half, while Chaaban was out of luck when his crisp shot struck the inside of the Margate upright.

Play was sometimes scrappy in thhe second half, with chances at both ends, but Staines held out for three valuable points.

Staines: Courtnage; J Newton, Sargent, Isa (Younghusband 18, Maskell 74), Flitter , Scarlett, K Warner, Risbridger, Thomas, Nwokeji, Chaaban; J Kiffin, Ventour, Allaway (gk).
