GOAL-HUNGRY City of York Hockey Club's first team have thrown themselves a Northern League division one relegation lifeline.

They beat fellow strugglers Stockton I 5-4 with a late goal at Huntington School to collect three precious points and drag their opponents into trouble.

Both sides have 14 league points and complete their programme this Saturday with York at home to Didsbury Northern, while Stockton, who have a better goal difference than York, entertain Crewe Vagrants.

York built up a 4-0 interval lead but Stockton stormed back to level only for Chris Wilson to snatch the winner with a reverse stick-flick five minutes from the end.

The home side turned on the style in the first half with Simon Grey opening the scoring before finishing off a fine move for the second goal.

Grey's shot was then stopped by a defender's foot on the line, Nick Carter converting the penalty stroke.

When Paul Sanguin netted the fourth after a fine solo run by Alex Cockram, York looked safe.

But Stockton stepped on the gas after the interval and after Carter had to leave the field temporarily after being hit in the face by the ball the visitors struck twice.

Stockton continued to press after Carter's return and levelled the match only for Wilson to come up with the winner after good work by Sanguin, Cockram and Matt Fletcher.

Car trouble hit City of York II as a breakdown saw them arrive at Durham City I for their Division Two East game with only ten players.

The home side took full advantage to ease to a 7-2 victory, scoring three times in the opening ten minutes. Graham McFall and Stuart Burke netted for York.

City of York III were also on the end of a heavy beating, crushed 8-3 by Doncaster in Yorkshire League division one. They led through Peter Perryman and Richard Cockram made it 2-2 after Doncaster led.

York then went to pieces in a ten-minute spell before third team debutant Ben Foster netted near the end.

Honours were even as City of York IV drew 1-1 at home with Wakefield III in division three, Andy Wilson netting for York.

Richard Tanner-Smith scored York V's goal in their 5-1 division four defeat at Doncaster V.

John Bell scored a hat-trick as rampant City of York VI thrashed Normanby Park II 7-2 in division six. Keith Wilson (2), Tim Jolly and Tom Feasby were also among the goals.

City of York VII did event better, hammering a weak Thirsk II 8-0 in division eight. Scorers were Patrick Herriott (3), Rob Prentice (2), Andy Potts (2) and Neil Reader.

Michael Sansoni netted City of York VIII's equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Wakefield VII in division nine.

City of York IX struggled to get a team out against Ben Rhydding and slipped to a 4-2 defeat in division ten. Aidan Richardson hit both York goals.
