A Scottish teenage whizz-kid has commissioned Robertsons Ledbury Preserves to produce 120,000 jars of "Superjam" for the supermarket giants Waitrose.

Fraser Doherty, 17, of Edinburgh, started making jam when he was 14, following his grandmother's recipe, which makes use of grape juice instead of sugar.

At 15, he was already turning out 1,000 jars a week from his grandmother's kitchen.

Now Waitrose has agreed to stock his product and the big time beckons.

The Little Marcle Road firm has been contracted to handle the order, although the jam will not bear Robertson's name.

Robertson's development and commercial teams have worked closely with Fraser to get production going and spokesman Ken Jollans: "He came to us, because we are good at high quality specialities."

Fraser is pitching his product at consumers who may be attracted by the use of fruit sugars instead of more conventional sugars.

Georgina Jury, retail business manager at Robertson's, said: "It has been a great experience to work with Fraser. His energy, drive and entrepreneurship are particularly impressive for someone so young and he deserves all the publicity he is getting."
