WHILE I fully support the suggestion we do something about the Tesco superstore in Orpington, I fear it is too late.

It is a sad yet true fact that today money rules.

Very little else matters to Bromley Council other than "how much can we make?"

Take a look at the "brownfield" developments.

Bromley will say they are following Government guidelines.

What they really mean is "we don't say no because saying no to a planning application by a developer means no money for Bromley Council".

We also need to ask why do housing developments rarely include "affordable" homes?

Do we really need more four/five bedroom "boxes" in Orpington?

In money terms, there is no profit in building affordable homes.

Where is the money promised to Priory Gardens for some much-needed refurbishment? It was promised, then taken back.

What has the War Memorial done to upset the Council?

It has stood proud in its place for many years.

Is it just a coincidence talk of moving it has only come about since the Tesco development?

Why do roads which were deemed unsuitable for parking suddenly become suitable when Bromley can charge for parking there?

Look at the Nugent development.

How can Bromley say they are doing their bit for Orpington when they allow such a development and the high street shops move out?

And how long will Marks & Spencer remain in Orpington High Street?

They are off to Nugent just as soon as they can placate the public over late-night deliveries.

And so it will continue in the name of progress.

We can and should continue to fight against developments which we feel are unwarranted.

But unless we have the money to back our fight, then we must realise in the end we are likely to be put down in the name of profit.
