A LEADING North Yorkshire village butchery business has won top awards for its steak and pork pies and sausages.

BW and DJ Glaves of Cayley Lane, Brompton-by-Sawdon, lifted the honours at British Pig Executive's regional championships held at Askham Bryan College.

The family company has been run by Brian Glaves and his wife, Doreen, since 1972 after Mr Glaves bought it from his former employer, the late Colin Croft.

Today, the business involves Mr and Mrs Glaves's sons, Anthony and James, and his wife, Hazel.

As well as running one of only a handful of butchery enterprises to process meat at its premises, the family also has award-winning sheep flocks at a 200-acre farm, where they breed Suffolk, Texel and Old English Leicesters.

The business now employs some 22 staff, said Brian Glaves, supplying meat to hotels and local authorities over a wide area as well as many families.

"We were encouraged to enter our pies and sausages in the Meal and Livestock Commission's competition and we were delighted to get silver awards for our steak and pork pies, as well as bronze awards in the specialist sausage class with our Brompton sausage, " said Mr Glaves.

As well as being a well-known butcher in the county, Mr Glaves is also renown as a judge of sheep at the Great Yorkshire and Smithfield Shows.
