A NEWPORT Tory councillor could have scuppered his chances of becoming an AM after calling for the scrapping of the Assembly.

Peter Davies, whose son David is AM and Mo for Monmouth, faces being dropped from the Conservatives' list of potential election candidates.

Party officials are examining whether the Stow Hill councillor can be removed from the approved candidates list for the 2007 Assembly elections.

Mr Davies said devolution had produced expensive "politically correct schemes", instead of allowing money to go towards keeping council taxes down or to schools and hospitals.
