As the London Olympics gather apace and will soon be here, we in Borehamwood seemingly live in an area where sport of all kinds, other than football, are not engaged in by the majority of the town's population - that's if we are to believe what we read in the Borehamwood & Elstree Times, as the sports pages are mostly devoid of anything other than football.

Okay, maybe rugby, and in the January 26 edition, we had three pages of sport with most of it given over to Boreham Wood FC, Arsenal Ladies who play at the BWFC ground, Belstone FC, Tabards rugby match, and thankfully a report on our local swimming club.

The Olympics cover all sport and yet in our town of 30,000 people there are no regular reports on athletics, which is what the Olympics are primarily about. We do not read fringe sports reports and even in football at parks level and nobody seems to play the game at adult level.

At Elliott Star FC, it looks to be its last season in the Hertfordshire County League due to a lack of players, some of whom cannot be bothered to train or turn up to play. This bugs me, as chairman Ray Capper and his small committee have to pay out of their own pockets to keep Star afloat due to a lack of interest. What will footballing youngsters do when there is no football clubs locally at a senior level in which they can play?

Who gives a hoot in this area and, dare I say across the country, in which generally we have all become spectators?

Perhaps the Times can send a rallying call to the country to get off our behinds and take up a sport, not that we can all be winners, but to take part and be a part of a team or just pursue your own sporting theme.

And don't say we have not got the sporting facilities. All you have to do is get up and go do. It's out there and even if you don't play the game you can help out and spread the message.
