THE first of a new fleet of high-tech trains glistened as it glided through South Lakeland this week to the delight of local user groups.

As part of a £250 million investment on the part of TransPennine Express, the polished Pennine Class 185 drew up at the newly-revamped Windermere Railway Station on Monday to be met with praise from the Lakes Line Rail User Group and Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Tim Farron.

The 100mph engine, one of a fleet of 51 that will be introduced on the Windermere-to-Manchester Airport line over the next four weeks, boasts air-conditioning and a global positioning information system to keep passengers up-to-date throughout their journeys.

It offers Lakes and Furness Line passengers access to first class carriages for the first time in 15 years, plus extra space to cater for wheelchair users and on-board security cameras.

Mr Farron said the trains, which are replacing the old 175 engines and should be better equipped to tackle the Lake District fells, made public transport a more viable option for locals and visitors.

In addition, TPE is offering passengers the chance to upgrade their tickets to first class between Windermere and Manchester Airport for £3 until the New Year.
