WALTHAMSTOW trainer Mick Puzey's Too Risky continues to follow firmly in the footsteps of the Claverhambury Kennels biggest ever success story Fire Height Dan after winning the £13,000 Ladbrokes.com Arc final at the east London track on Tuesday.

Just like former Greyhound of the Year winner Dan, Too Risky had previously enjoyed success in the Peterborough Puppy Derby, before following that up with a breathtaking display to win the Arc this week.

Puzey's 7-2 shot was one of five railers in this contest and having been handed the black jacket of four certainly had it all to do.

But having pinged the lids, Too Risky was quickly into his stride to lead by the first turn and looked comfortable approaching the home straight.

An excellent late surge though from Charlie Lister's Zigzag Dutchy provided a thrilling climax, with Too Risky only just withstanding the challenge by a short head to win in 28.70secs.

A delighted Puzey said: "It is certainly a nice pattern to follow that's for sure. Unlike Dan though who held his position in the middle, Too Risky once he got clear had to get straight on the rails because that is where he like to run.

"So it was a great performance, although I was holding my breath at the end because Charlie's dog made a great late surge and I didn't think we were going to hold him off.

"Things went a bit pear-shaped after the Peterborough Puppy Derby, because we just couldn't seem to beat Cobra Striking, but we have certainly moved on now by winning the Arc."

The Waltham Abbey-based handler was also delighted for the winning connections of George Rutt, Matthew Neil, Marello Monselatto, and is hoping for more success for the trio in the months ahead.

He added: "I've known George Rutt who heads the syndicate for years, although to be honest I always use to say oh no when he brought his dogs along and I certainly did cringe when he said he had a puppy for me.

"But I'm delighted for George, as well as the two work colleagues he roped in to take a share of the dog. They have certainly won the lottery straight away, because neither of them had been involved with greyhounds before. We will be off to Oxford now with Too Risky to trial him in for the Pall Mall and then hopefully the Derby after that."

It was certainly a memorable night for Puzey with three winners from his five runners, after Perceptive Pacey and Mitzie also enjoyed success.

There was also joy for former Stow trainers Jim Reynolds and Ernest Gaskin as well, after the pair won the two invitation races on the card with Risk Related and Cobra Striking respectively.

Back to this week and both tommorow (Thursday's) and Saturday's cards are fully graded.
