MALVERN survived a late fightback to register a 32-27 win at Camp Hill in Midlands Two West.

The Spring Lane side were grateful for a try-saving tackle from Chris Hooper early on.

Malvern's pack took control and drove downfield, winning a penalty, which was put into touch in the corner.

The resultant catch-and-drive was inevitable as was the emergence of Shaun Lancett to add to his tally for the season in the 11th minute.

From the re-start, Malvern counter-attacked with Roberts fielding a kick ahead and working the ball across for Hooper to join the line - his pace taking him through to ground the ball between the posts for Ryan Watkins to convert.

Camp Hill pulled back a penalty midway through the half but Malvern responded by driving a maul 25 metres before the ball was released to Richard Fleming to power through the defence for a well-earned try.

Malvern had Tukia Muli sin-binned and the hosts pulled back a penalty but Hooper's 25-metre drop goal gave his side a 20-6 advantage at half-time.

They extended their lead soon after the break when Gareth Taylor took five points following another catch-and-drive close to the line. Watkins' conversion attempt came back off the post.

Camp Hill pulled back a converted try on the hour mark but Malvern responded by winning a scrum against the head. The ball was whipped out to Muli, who used his strength to break through and feed Fleming for his second score with Watkins converting.

A pair of converted tries brought the hosts to within a single score of their opponents but Malvern hung on for the two points.

Spring Lane director of rugby David Robins said: "Camp Hill are a fine old club with a proud tradition and, with the talented youngsters they are bringing through, I'm sure they will bounce back from relegation.

"They played well above their league position today but our pack always had the upper hand and, if we had been less profligate in the loose, would have won by a far greater margin.

"Our poor discipline, plus some of the worst refereeing I've seen at our level put up the penalty count against us and let them come back into the game. Our play was disjointed at times, although the forwards again put in the hard yards.

"Skipper for the day, Jamie Anderson, put in perhaps his best performance of the season while Liam Moloney showed his versatility by moving from hooker to flanker as Alex Wenden returned to the front row after injury and proved he had lost none of his skills during his lay-off.

"Richard Fleming continues to impress with his much-improved play as does Chris Hooper as a solid attacking full-back."

Malvern travel to Burton on in the league on Saturday.
