A GROUP for war veterans is holding its first-ever open day.

Glentworth Ex-Service Social Club will host the day on March 31 in Lowfield Street, Dartford, to let everyone know the venue is still open.

This is after a compulsory purchase order was put on the Lowfield Street site for development three years ago.

But Communities Secretary Ruth Kelly refused permission for the development in July last year.

It was rejected on the grounds the development would have an unacceptable environmental impact on the area.

The social club was founded in 1920 in memory of Viscount Glentworth, who died in service to the country.

It has 1,200 members, including ex- servicemen, ex-servicemen's widows and family members.

Old Army trucks will be on display and food and drink will be available for visitors inside the club.

Club secretary Terry Blundell says the day will be a way of showing everyone the social events the club organises.

The 68-year-old added: "Many people think we have closed "This is a good way of showing them we are still very much here."
