SOLDIERS old and new joined together to commemorate comrades who died in the First World War on Sunday.

The memorial service took place at St Elphin's Church on Sunday where serving members of the 4th Battalion Duke of Lancaster's Regiment met with veterans for the annual parade.

Warrington mayor, Clr Linda Dirir attended along with other officials from across the north west.

The event culminated with a civic reception at the Parr Hall.

An Army spokesman said: "The veterans are always very happy to be back in Warrington because it has always been such a memorable occasion and it was this time too.

"It was especially important this year because there had been another change in the way the regiments are organised with the new Duke of Lancaster's Regiment.

"We received a warm welcome from nearly 40 civic dignitaries."

Regimental Sunday dates back to October 1938 when members of the regiment marched through Warrington, to unveil the regimental memorial to those who died serving in their battalion.

This year marks the debut appearance of the Duke of Lancaster Regiment which is amalgamated from troops around the north west.
