Sussex remain on course for the Championship after taking seven Nottinghamshire wickets during the second session on day 2 at Trent Bridge.

Replying to Sussex's 560-5 declared, Nottinghamshire crashed to 144-7 at tea after losing four wickets in 13 balls just before the interval.

Notts, who need to reach 200 to make sure they stay in the top flight next season, were beginning to frustrate Sussex during a stand of 59 between David Hussey and Samit Patel.

But they collapsed when Patel lobbed up an easy catch to cover to give Robin Martin-Jenkins the first of two wickets in successive overs.

Mushtaq Ahmed then struck twice in the next over. Mark Ealham was bowled and skipper Stephen Fleming was caught at slip off a reverse-sweep.

When Martin-Jenkins had Hussey caught at slip Notts had slumped to 144-7. They were 146-7 at tea, needing to reach 411 to avoid the follow on.

James Kirtley had made the breakthrough when he removed Darren Bicknell. David Alleyne was bowled in Mushtaq's second over and Will Smith became Jason Lewry's first victim.

Earlier, Martin-Jenkins and Matt Prior both made unbeaten half-centuries as Sussex scored 140 in 28 overs before the declaration just before lunch.
