MORE than 2,000 people in North Yorkshire gave up smoking with the help of the NHS this year.

Figures published by the North Yorkshire and York Primary Care Trust show that the trust's Stop Smoking classes helped 2,242 people quit the habit between last April and the end of January.

However, the total is about 700 less than targets set by the Government.

The trust's performance and delivery manager, Bill Redlin, said: "The PCT recognises this target as particularly challenging and, although referrals to the specialist smoking cessation service have increased through the new year, it is unlikely that this will be sufficient to recover the year-to-date shortfall.

"Work continues through local media campaigns and with primary care to maximise the year-end position."

Statistics for how many people have stopped smoking are based on those who have not had a cigarette for a period of four weeks after completing the course.
