CELEBRATING a 21st birthday is a milestone in anyone's life, but for Sarah Swanborough it tells a remarkable story of courage and determination.

Miss Swanborough, of Sinodun Road, Didcot, was born with severe disabilities, including brain damage, curvature of the spine and epilepsy, and doctors told her parents she was unlikely to reach her first birthday.

But, yesterday, against all the odds, she celebrated her 21st with family and friends.

He mother, Janet Dineen, said: "Sarah spent the first five years of her life in hospital. The doctors told me she would not see her first birthday, so this is absolutely amazing.

"Then they said she wouldn't reach the age of seven. When she was 12, she had to have major surgery and was given a one-in-ten chance of survival.

"Against all medical knowledge, she has proved everyone of them wrong."

Despite her condition, Miss Swanborough lives life to the full and enjoys swimming, music, eating out and boat trips.

Mrs Dineen said: "She is so spirited and has so much love to give. We are so strong me and her, we pull each other through anything."

She said Sarah had lost her mobility on three occasions, but each time had battled to regain it.

"She does not let her disability stop her doing what she wants to do," said Mrs Dineen. "She lives life to the full."

The family are also planning a party on a narrowboat later in the year as spending time on the river is one of Miss Swanborough's favourite hobbies.
