QUESTION

My Westie is 13 years old with diabeties she has just undergone dental surgery to remove 6 rotten on both sides of face. On the first day after sugery she ate well and we gave her only half her dose of insulin as advised by vet. Her appetite was good from then onwards however a day later I noticed that she was very lethargic, confused and one of her eyes had sweeled up with a white muscus evident. I took her to the vet and he gave a anti- inflam injection, her eye is less swollen, less red but not as bright and open as usual Please advise as to why this has happened.

ANSWER

Dear Dhamika,
Diabetic animals have less resistance to infection, so when your pet had teeth removed there may have been an iflammation by the bacteria in the tooth sockets. this can cause quite dramatic swelings-as you have witnessed, Which appears to have responded well to the injection. Hope all will be well.
