A SERIAL purse snatcher is believed to have targeted several victims in Blackburn.

Shoppers are being warned to keep their handbags and purses secure after a spate of bag dip-ins in the town centre.

The warning comes after 11 offences took place in supermarkets and stores across the town since January 1.

Police believe the same person may be responsible for the thefts.

Officers are warning shoppers to be extra vigilant and keep their belongings safe and secure at all times.

PC Scott Boast, of Blackburn police, said: "There have been 11 thefts of this type since the start of the year, where pickpockets have targeted unsuspecting shoppers.

"I urge people to be extra vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police. In particular, I encourage people who are shopping in their local supermarkets not to hang their bags on the back of trolleys, and never to leave their belongings unattended.

"My message to town centre thieves is that we are watching you, and will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our town centres."

PC Boast added: "We would also urge anybody who has any information about the person, or persons, responsible for these offences to get in contact."

Two thefts took place at Asda, Grimshaw Park; two people were targeted in Morrisons, Railway Road; two purses were stolen from shoppers in Debenhams, Northgate; two happened inside the shopping mall at Cobden Court and Spring Hill, and other offences happened at the five-day market, TK Maxx, Townsmoor; and at Matalan, Lower Audley.

Items stolen include purses, handbags, mobile phones, and a wallet. The offences have occurred mainly in the afternoon and early evening.

Anyone with information about the recent thefts should contact Blackburn Police on 08451 253545, or Crimestoppers, in confidence, on 0800 555 111.
