St John volunteer honoured

| Commander Tony Mallard and Derek Compton |
A RETIRED civil servant from Horley has been recognised for 28 year service to St John Ambulance.
Derek Compton, 78, was presented with a St John Ambulance Commander's Commendation Certificate after being on duty 24 hours a day and seven days a week.
He joined in 1980 after completing a first aid training course at work.
He said: "I read the rules and regs of St John and was intrigued. You can be on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
"I had a telephone extension put in by the side of my bed because I was put in charge of the St John Ambulance Hall, and this hall is an emergency venue in the event of a plane crash. It has been used as a mortuary as well as a refuge for flood victims and I needed to be contactable day or night."
Mr Compton retired in December but still comes to the hall on training nights.
St John Ambulance eastern sector officer Jo Maynard said: "Derek was an active member right up until Christmas. He is the most wonderful man.
"When I was first made superintendent, I don't think I could have coped without him. He has always been a real support."
