Character shows through

Woodmansterne U13 115-6

Reigate Priory U13 B 70-6

PRIORY'S U13 B, comprised entirely of under-12s, travelled to Woodmansterne to play a friendly match, and while coming a clear second, their young side nevertheless displayed no little skill and character in their game.

Priory's young bowlers and fielders stuck to their task manfully in the heat, taking six wickets, and restricting their opposition to 115 when a bigger scored beckoned at one stage.

A bright start by the hosts was checked by two wickets in two balls by the excellent Kieran Caplen - 2-19 in three overs. That success brought Danny Shields to the crease, who proceeded to hit six boundaries in his 25 undefeated runs, while opener Michael Edwards batted sensibly for 23.

George Goodwin and James Scott bowled relatively tidy spells, and skipper Joe Harrington's two overs of spin deserved greater reward before late penetration was provided by Nick Bowkett - two wickets in his one over - and Will Playford-Wall - one wicket for six runs in his first game for the club).

Priory's opening pair faced a strong opening attack, and the innings was soon in trouble at 8-3. George Goodwin came to the crease in the fourth over, and began by carefully seeing off the openers while Shahil Pallana and Alex Nicholson showed intent at the other end, before falling to good catches.

Will Playford-Wall, whose 13 not out capped a promising debut, lent impressive support, adding 44 for the sixth wicket with Goodwin, the latter proving to be the pick of the Priory batters with 23 well crafted runs, including a splendid six over square leg.
